Thomas Wayne Starns, 93, a longtime resident of Ellinwood, passed away at Diversicare in Sedgwick, KS on January 2, 2024. Born in Lafontaine, KS on June 11, 1930, he was the son of Claude M. & Beatrice (Elrod) Starns. Tom graduated from Kansas State University in 1958 after serving in the Korean War. He married Maytha Louise Selby on June 12, 1954, in Brewster, KS. Tom worked as a teacher, coach, and insurance agent. He refereed high school sports for many years. After retirement, Tom operated a lawn mowing service. Former memberships include Masonic lodge (Hill City), American Legion (Osborne), K.N.E.A, Lions Club, B.P.O.E. and The United Methodist Church. Tom enjoyed tinkering in the garage, fishing, and traveling - especially with his grandkids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maytha, who passed away July 10, 2012; brother, F. Warren Starns; sister, Marjorie Westover. Survivors include daughter Connie (Frank) Cortez; grandchildren, Erica Starns Kalkofen, Frank Cortez, and Steven Cortez; 3 great-grandchildren with a 4th on the way; also survived by spouse, Ethel; one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Inurnment with military honors at Brewster Cemetery will take place March 17th, 10:00 am for Thomas. We will also place daughter Sheryl’s remains in her final resting place. Memorials are suggested towards DAV (Disabled American Vets) in care of Minnis Chapel, PO Box 246, Ellinwood, KS 67526.
