Obituary

Neil Wolfe Whetstone, 85, passed away at Wesley Medical Center on Oct. 12, 2021. He was born on Nov. 14, 1935 to Lester and Evelyn (Wolfe) Whetstone in Great Bend, KS. Neil was raised in Ellinwood and loved his hometown and community very much. He first worked for Pacific Gas and Electric Co. in California and Oregon and later worked for and retired from Enron Natural Gas in Bushton. He was an Army veteran and served in the Korean War. Neil was a classic car enthusiast who enjoyed spending time fixing up his 1954 Ford F-100 truck. He was a member of the Vintage Wheels Car Club in Great bend and has spent many years attending car shows bringing home numerous trophies and awards. 

Survivors include: wife of 43 years, Claudia (Miller) Whetstone; 4 sons, Robert (Sheila) Whetstone, David Simmons, Larry (Teresa) Simmons, Jim (Janice) Simmons; 2 daughters, Rene (Steve) Bethke, Patricia Simmons; sister Nada (Dale) Swalander; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents, late wife Emma (Wagner) Whetstone, sister Naomi Morgan, and son, Donnie Simmons. 

A family inurnment will take place at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery at a later date with Pastor Jason Winget. Memorials are suggested to Ellinwood Hospital Foundation (new building fund) in care of Minnis Chapel, PO Box 246, Ellinwood, KS 67526.
